Emmerdale fans have discovered their new 'favourite' character following the recent horror and heartbreak to hit the village. During the latest trip to the Dales on Tuesday night (October 25), viewers re-joined Vinny Dingle in the midst of his raw grief following the death of his wife, Liv.
Fans of the ITV soap were horrified and life in floods of tears last week when the character, played by Isobel Steele, became the second victim of the windstorm which was unleashed on the Yorkshire village. Liv lost her life after she was unable to be saved from being crushed underneath Sam and Lydia Dingle's caravan.
Liv and her husband Vinny had been trying to make their way to the Woolpack when the wind blew the vehicle in their direction. Vinny survived the accident and he and Liv's brother Aaron tried to move the caravan until being warned by Paddy that they may do more harm than good and to wait for the emergency services as Liv lay stuck.
When help did arrive, however, it wasn't good news and Paddy had to pass on the heartbreaking news that there was nothing they could do and Aaron and Vinny needed to say their goodbyes as Liv wasn't going to survive her injuries.
Since then, Vinny has struggled to cope, refusing help from his mum, Mandy Dingle, and wanting nothing to do with organising his wife's funeral, even claiming he didn't want to go. But Paddy thought that bringing Vinny the dog he was due to adopt with Liv would help.
As Chip made her way into the house with a nervous yet well-meaning Paddy, Vinny lost it. "What? Mine and Liv's rescue dog?" he remarked upon seeing the animal as Paddy explained: "Sort of, I know you thought you were getting a male dog but she's a b**ch. God knows how they got that wrong! Anyway, we think Chip kind of suits her and we thought..."
But the widow snapped: "We've not even had Liv's funeral yet and now you're trying to replace her with a dog!" Mandy was quick to explain as she said: "No, you know we didn't mean it like that. As you were going to have her anyway, we thought that she might be a good distraction..."
She also turned to Paddy and said she knew it was a 'bad idea', to which Vinny shouted that it was. He refused to have anything to do with the dog but Mandy and Paddy left the innocent pet with him anyway. Later, as he came to get a drink from the kitchen, Vinny told the doe-eyed pup that he still 'wasn't interested'.
"Still here then," he remarked to the dog who was tucking into a bowl of food before looking at her potential owner. "Look, I'm not interested... I'm sorry. Someone else will have to look after you as it sure as hell won't be me..."
But Emmerdale viewers have branded Chip their new 'favourite' character and hope Vinny will come round. @sophdean92 said: "New favourite character. I really hope he comes around and you show the positive impact a pet can have on mental health." @k.wojciechowska123 commented: "Vinny will come around and chip will comfort him in his grief, I’m afraid more tears will come though."
@bevei.x said: "Aww love them both together already." @soapfann2020 wrote: "Omg so cuteeeee chip is gonna help vinny if he let's him." @chrissybin2012 added: "It’s fate like Liv is up there directing Paddy to help Vinny how, could you not love that little face. Vinny will come round."
