Those closest to Emmerdale think they know what sets it apart from other soaps.
Later this year, the popular ITV programme will be celebrating its 50th anniversary and those connected to Emmerdale have been talking about its long-lasting appeal. Boss Jane Hudson thinks she knows a key ingredient which has kept fans coming back for decades.
She explained: “We like to ensure we keep the essence of Yorkshire, to be outside as much as possible, showing off our area. So, we can have tractors, farm animals and our unique selling point is the big house and the village with working people in it. As much as we are unique to Yorkshire, I think our stories transcend.”

Jane continued: “For one, a story which happens in Yorkshire can connect with someone in Suffolk, an affair is an affair whatever county you are having sex in. So, I think stories do transfer nationwide.
“Also, our writing team, I think there’s 28, they are from all over the country and we have a wide age range. I think our oldest writer is in his 70s. So, we cover a whole range of ages and areas.”
Star Jeff Hordley, who plays Cain Dingle, agreed with the soap boss on Yorkshire playing a big part in making Emmerdale unique. Jeff sees himself as something of an adopted Yorkshireman.
He said: “I’m just thrilled and very proud to be part of this show. As Jane said, one of the jewels in the crown, as much as we’ve got a wonderful cast, team and crew, is where we work in this beautiful village. I think it is great that we showcase Yorkshire and I’m just proud to be part of it being a Lancashire lad. I genuinely am, I feel like a surrogate Yorkshire boy.”
In October, we’ll see lots of major storylines happening to mark Emmerdale’s 50th anniversary. There’s going to be a huge storm which will impact many of the show’s regulars.
