Emmerdale fans have been left scratching their heads after discovering that newcomer Caleb Milligan is hiding a secret. The character, played by William Ash, arrived on screen in the ITV soap on Christmas Day when he was revealed as the half brother of Cain Dingle.
Caleb, who claims to be the son of the late Faith Dingle, paid Cain a visit in prison after he took the blame for his son, Kyle, after witnessing the youngster, played by Huey Quinn, accidentally let off a shotgun and kill Al Chapman.
But after Kyle struggled to keep his killer secret and Caleb's arrival prompted the schoolboy to come clean and confess with the newcomer promising to get a good legal team involved in a bid to keep the youngster out of prison whilst also speeding up Cain's release, which happened in scenes aired last month.
After initially being furious with Caleb's involvement with Kyle, and him getting cosy with the rest of the Dingle clan, Cain, played by Jeff Hordley, seemed to relent and in scenes aired earlier this month, the former bad boy finally shared his thanks and appeared to be warming to having Caleb around.
However, after enjoying darts and pints with his brother, Caleb was seen getting back in his car and picking up his phone. He told the mystery caller that he was finally "making headway" with Cain and added: "We keep reeling him in until we get exactly what we want."
Fans rushed to social media to share their theories about his true identity. @TwellyWatcher said: "Caleb looking like an undercover cop felt like it was coming for a while… HE PROBABLY ISN’T EVEN THE REAL CALEB DINGLE - I bet the real Caleb died!!! #Emmerdale Calling it now."
But appearing on Loose Women as the show celebrates its own 'soap month', Emmerdale's executive producer Jane Hudson was quick to quash those theories.
"I can tell you he's not an undercover cop," she told the ITV show's panel. "Coronation Street recently did that story brilliantly with Spider so we're not going to copy it. So he's not an undercover cop [but] there is a secret about Caleb and the viewers have not yet guessed it. I ahve been reading all the theories about who he is and I'm like, 'It's not that one, It's not that one!'"
Jane also revealed when viewers will get to see the conclusion of the storyline with Cain and Kyle. "By the end of this month, you will find out what happens to Kyle. Will he be reunited with his dad? Will he be locked up? We'll get to that at the end of this month."
