Billy was hiding a past of crime and drug addiction beneath his kindly disposition.
In 2001 he and former associate Gareth Brannigan robbed a petrol station at gunpoint and crashed into Susan Barlow as they made their escape, killing her.
When his dark secret was revealed in 2017 her twin brother Peter plied Billy with alcohol, bundled him into the boot of his car and drove him to the edge of a cliff.
Following a heated confrontation Billy plunged off the edge of the cliff and was in a wheelchair because of his horrific injuries.
Peter's nephew Adam Barlow then exacted revenge on Billy by getting him hooked on painkillers following the fall.
And Billy's addict brother Lee supplied him with alcohol.
Billy overcame his addiction is a doting guardian to Summer Spellman, the adopted daughter of his ex Drew Spellman who passed away in 2017.
