ITV Corrie star Alexandra Mardell returns to TV in first role after quitting soap

Alexandra Burke's character Emma Brooker said an emotional goodbye to the Coronation Street cobbles back in April. The bubbly character waved goodbye to her loved ones in the soap to start a new life in Australia with her boyfriend, but not without serious complications.

Emma met her soulmate Jon Spear through highly unusual circumstances when Emma attended the funeral of his grandfather Ted, who she and best pal Faye Windass accidentally ran down during a driving lesson on New Year's Day. After the accident the girls found him dead at his flat when they went to check on him and left him for his grandson to find.

Emma feared she would lose her beau when he finally found out the truth. But just as she thought they were over, Jon forgave her and insisted that he still wanted to move away with Emma after they had fallen head over heels in love.

We haven't heard much about them since. But there's good news for fans missing Alexandra on their TV screens because she's returning to ITV in her first role since Corrie.

Alexandra, 29, who played Emma from 2018, is starring in new comedy The Family Pile which will air in 2023. ITV says the series will be 'a comedic exploration' about four sisters who have lost their parents and are packing up the family home to sell. 'But even in grief their messy lives go on.'

The series, filmed in Liverpool, will star Alexandra, Sherlock and Mr Selfridge star Amanda Abbington, Home Fires and Downton Abbey's Clare Calbraith and Nathan Barley and No Heroics star Claire Keelan as the sisters. Congratulations came pouring in for Alexandra as she shared the news on Twitter with the words "Had all the fun on this job!" with a smiling face and hearts emoji.

"Amazing! Can't wait! X" Harriet Bibby who plays Corrie's Summer Spellman told her. Tony Maudsley, who plays George Shuttleworth, shared applause emojis and cheered: "Yayyy!" with a smiling face. And Jack James Ryan who plays Jacob Hay praised: "Already killing it, no surprises! Can’t wait for this! x"

Alexandra said she was looking forward to taking on new roles after announcing her exit from the soap. The Leeds actress, who starred in the crime drama Vera and the short film Chocolate Pieces before Corrie, said her co-stars at the Trafford-based soap were supportive when she revealed she was leaving.

"I just want to play another character," she explained to the Manchester Evening News and other press in March. "There are just some other people I want to give a go as well."

Alexandra's ditzy character arrived as an apprentice at Audrey Robert's hair salon. And she had a short-lived fling with Audrey's grandson David Platt.

The following year she was part of a major storyline when her mum turned out to be Fiona Middleton and she found out that her biological father was Coronation Street legend Steve McDonald after losing the man she thought was her real dad.
