Coronation Street star Jack P Shepherd has revealed how he was involved in a terrifying fireball incident while enjoying a weekend away in the Lake District with his girlfriend. The actor, who is famed for playing David Platt in the ITV soap, and his partner Hanni Treweek headed on their UK getaway to celebrate Valentine's Day earlier this month.
However, Jack has only just revealed the horror that could have unfolded on his podcast, Sofa Cinema Club, which he hosts with Corrie co-stars Colson Smith and Ben Price, who play Craig Tinker and Nick Tilsley in the long-running, Salford-based soap.
The 35-year-old shared how he and influencer Hanni, who worked behind the scenes on Corrie and regularly posts fashion shots on social media, were staying in a cabin in a remote location in Cumbria which boasted an idyllic hot tub and log fire but when they arrived, he needed the help of his phone torchlight as it was already getting dark.
Speaking on the Sofa Cinema Club podcast, he said: "To celebrate Valentine's Day, me and Hanni went up to the Lake District. You can stay in those cabins that are in the middle of nowhere. There's a hot tub, log fire, it's like being back in the 70s. Off-grid. There's no internet, electricity is scarce. It's almost romantic, but it's also frightening."
He went on to explain: "We turned up at six and it's getting dark. There are no street lamps, so I'm using the torch on my phone. My sister has a log fire hot tub, so I'm quite familiar with them. But I'm in the rain."
The soap star was quick to admit that this hot tub was different to what he was used to, saying that there was a shoot with a hatch that he had to open, dropping logs and kindling down and hoping it caught to get it going. "I can't get my hands down, so I have to light it above and drop it down, and it's raining. I can't even get the fire going," Jack said.
"I'm trying to light this kindling in my hand while craning my neck to hold onto the brolly to stop water from dousing out the flames." But things took a sudden turn and Jack almost suffered what could have been a horrific accident.
"I'm thinking, 'There's got to be a simpler way?' And there was. I found a bottle of spirit, like lighter fluid," he said as he started to recall the terrifying incident. "Just as I'm pouring the lighter fluid down, of course I've got a bit of flame and it comes back up. Eyebrows. Brolly. And then the flame goes in the bottle. I had to drop the whole f***ing thing in.
"The whole thing went in and then it goes up like it's 5th November. I'm lucky I've still got my face." When asked if it blew up in his hand, he said: "Yeah. What I should've done is put the lighter fluid down before I started dropping a match. I did [get it going] in the end."
Earlier this month, Jack and Hanni enjoyed a trip to Poland where the couple spent a few days exploring the sights, including taking an emotional trip to Auschwitz. Days after his moving Instagram post about his visit, Jack has returned to Instagram to share some lighter moments from his and Hanni's trip which included a fancy horse-drawn carriage ride.
He could be seen donning a grey jumper and dark chinos as he smiled away from the camera in a pair of shades. The snap also saw Hanni, who worked behind the scenes on Corrie and regularly posts fashion shots on social media, gazing at her man while cutting a stylish figure in a beige coat which she donned with a white cosy hat and checked scarf.
There was also a video of the loved-up pair giggling while at dinner. "Was lucky to have birthday celebrations in Poland with these two," he captioned the post referring to one of the images that saw a glam Hanni posing alongside her equally stunning friend.
