ITV Corrie legend Simon Gregson's real-life injury as Steve McDonald appears in wheelchair

Coronation Street icon Steve McDonald made a welcomed comeback to the soap in Tuesday night's episode (November 29) as the character returned from a trip to Spain. But there was a surprise as the soap legend appeared in the Rovers Return in a wheelchair.

Steve, played by Simon Gregson, got sympathy from his pals in the boozer, with the exception of his wife Tracy, as he explained that he had broken his leg while chasing a mugger. Later the taxi driver confessed to his pal Tim Metcalfe that he might have been a bit economical with the truth regarding how he sustained his injury, and warned that she must never find out.

But Tim was then furious to find out that his wife Sally has given away his favourite jacket to a clothes swap. When Tim spotted Steve wearing the jacket, a row ensued and to get his own back he revealed to Tracy that Steve broke his foot at a foam party surrounded by girls.

@Wee_Westie29 tweeted: "Love the comedy due of Steve and Tim." @LyndseyFitz praised: "Glad to see Steve back he brings the much needed comedy!!" And @DanJBrownMUFC said: "Just seen #Corrie from tonight, good to see Steve back some funny moments."

Simon, who came second on last year's I'm a Celebrity, previously told how he broke his leg in six places, and it had to be written into his Corrie scenes, reported the Mirror. He said: "I've broken my leg. I literally just went over and rolled my ankle, outside the back of the house. It was done in six places.

He added: "I'm able to drive now, but walking across wet fields is a no for me. Because if I slip it's back to square one." Asked if Corrie had to write his broken leg into the script, he said: "Yeah, they've written it in. They just kind of spoke about it. It's like when Bobby Ewing woke up in the shower [in Dallas]. No one cares after about five minutes."
