Coronation Street fans were left 'gagging' following the arrival of an unexpected visitor to Rick Neelan's funeral. In Friday night's episode (April 15) there was drama as Kelly Neelan said farewell to her murdered gangster dad flanked by her guardians Gary and Maria Windass.
But as the devastated teen paid her respects to her father she was in for a shock as a stranger marched into the church and interrupted the service. And when he was asked if he was there to say a few words about Rick, he took aim and vengefully spat on his coffin.
Corrie viewers were reeling from the scene and complained that it was 'disgusting' and 'too realistic.' @DavidMackayy tweeted: "Did we really need to see the spit on the coffin #corrie." @jayne_leigh observed: "Spitting on the coffin...not really covid secure." And @NicoleMary2004 tweeted: "It’s Rick’s funeral, where is your respect? You should never spit on someone’s coffin if you didn’t like them, you should be respectful."

Over on Facebook Lesley-Ann Gibian complained: "Actually gagged when he did that. Did they have to show it landing on the coffin?" June Davies agreed: "Yes I thought that it was disgusting." And Lorraine Bick said: "Disgusting indeed. Too realistic."
Caroline O' Riordan commented: "Absolutely vile." Sue Sirrah said: "Didn't like it when he spit on the coffin." And Sezzie Sarah-Johnson Barber asked: "Why did we have to see that? I can tolerate anything but spitting totally disgusting!!"
But Val Mcphail replied: "Because in real life it happens." And Victoria Potts said: " Fair play! If I try and spit it sticks to my chins! Newbie for the next soap awards!"
The stranger then told Kelly he hopes her dad 'rots in hell'. And Gary snapped and punched the man. And as he was finally laid to rest no-one noticed a photographer lurking in the bushes.
Later Kelly, who also recently lost her mum Laura to stomach cancer, revealed that she had gone to see the man to apologise for her loan shark father's past behaviour. Kelly, played by Millie Gibson, has no idea that her dad was killed by Gary in 2019 in order to protect his loved ones after working for him as a debt collector.
His body was recenty discovered in the site of the new Weatherfield County training ground. But after Gary revealed the truth to Kelly's dying mum Laura, she took to rap and was charged with murder to ensure her daughter could stay with her guardians.
Sadly Kelly, who was neglected by her mum as a child, was unable to forgive Laura before her death. And after a change of heart she she didn't make it to hospital in time to say goodbye.
