Coronation Street's Jennie McAlpine and Alan Halsall have shared whether they think Fiz Stape and Tyrone Dobbs can be the next Jack and Vera Duckworth as the on-screen couple prepare to wed - again. It's been a whirlwind of a year for Fiz and Tyrone in the ITV soap with the pair starting the year separated but it looks like they may end 2022 as Mr and Mrs Dobbs.
The pair, who have been engaged on-screen before, were rocked in 2021 when Tyrone kissed lodger Alina Pop behind his poor fiancee's back before deciding to make a go of things with the beautician leaving Fiz heartbroken. However, as she found love with Phill Whittaker, Tyrone's jealousy of his former partner led to Alina leaving the cobbles for good while appearing to be pregnant with the mechanic's child.
Rivalry between Tyrone and Phill ensued but Fiz pressed on with her new relationship, planning on leaving the street to move into Phill's fancy home away from Weatherfield as well as preparing to wed. And despite various obstacles, such as Phill's ex Camilla showing up and Tyrone confessing his true feelings to Fiz, almost derailing the big day, Fiz decided to go through with the wedding and exchanged vows with Phill.
However, just hours later after Tyrone gifted the Underworld machinist with a pair of pearl earrings that once belonged to Vera Duckworth and gifted to her by her beloved husband Jack, Fiz couldn't hide her true feelings any longer and told Phill during their wedding reception at the Bistro that she couldn't be with him before leaving the party and running straight back into Tyrone's arms.
And before the year is out, Fiz looks set to have her second wedding of 2022 after Tyrone popped the question out of the blue in Roy's cafe. Unbeknownst to Fiz, Tyrone is planning a surprise Christmas Day wedding and on the morning of December 25, Fiz opens her Christmas present and is left bitterly disappointed.
But Tyrone shares a secret grin with Hope and Ruby as they're in on the fact he's planning to spring a wedding on his fiancee that day. Tyrone has been busy enlisting the help of Chesney, Gemma and Beth in order to make their nuptials happen. However, disaster strikes when Fiz heads out to buy a turkey and her car breaks down and without her phone, she's stuck.
"I think Tyrone doesn't think a great deal," Alan told the Manchester Evening News and other press when asked why Tyrone decides to plan a surprise wedding. "He's got everything back that he wanted. He now knows after all the things he's been through, and it's took a while for him to realise, that he wants the family unit he's never had. He wants Fiz and he loves Fiz and he wants all that to happen quickly.
"And of course, in his mind, nothing can go wrong and he plans it all off the cuff without telling Fiz and doesn't think of any eventuality that it won't come off perfectly to his plan. So it's all in good spirit and he wants the best."
But there is one part of the storyline that has left Jennie baffled. "I think why is the question?" she poses to her co-star when it is revealed that Tyrone seeks the help of Gemma Winter for Fiz's wedding dress. "I was told to in the script is the actual answer," Alan quipped.
As for why they haven't got down the aisle before now in two decades of an on-off relationship in Corrie, Alan revealed: "We got to see our very first kiss which was 21 years ago," Alan said as Jennie interjected with a stunned: "What!?" Alan continued: "I've probably been kissing Jennie more than anyone else in my life but it's crazy. I think as a couple they have so many times been close but at least this time they make it."
He added: "It was quite an interesting thing because we got shown various clips of Tyrone and Fiz together and honestly, I have no recollection of them. It's funny, there are these big passionate kisses and we're both looking at each other thinking, 'I don't remember this,' and I'm like, 'I'm glad she doesn't as well, it's not just on me then.'"
But on whether Tyrone and Fiz can be the next Jack and Vera, both Alan and Jennie had a similar response. "It's something I shy away from as much as I possibly can," Alan said. "For me, Jack and Vera were out there on their own. I think they're absolutely brilliant.
"I'd like to be Tyrone and Fiz, but I don't think anyone can touch Jack and Vera." Jennie agreed before adding: "But equally, it's always lovely to be asked that and also just the fact that maybe through, especially through Al and Tyrone's history with them, they're always remembered.
"Their picture is up in our house, we've still got their bar and just to live in their house is an absolute treat and that's what's so special about Corrie. In 60 odd years, we carry on and evolve and that's what happens in life but remembering that past is lovely and I hope we never stop that."
