ITV Coronation Street's Jenny star Sally Ann Matthews delights fans with 'blast from the past' as they share call for return

Jenny Connor hasn't had the best luck when it comes to love and the Coronation Street character's latest relationship appears to be coming to an end. And so it has got Sally Ann Matthews, who plays her, reminiscing.

The soap star took to Instagram following Wednesday night's trip to the cobbles in which viewers saw the Rovers Return landlady call time on her relationship with toyboy Leo as he held a grudge about turning down a job in Canada to stay in Weatherfield with her.

"She’s always been unlucky in love," Sally penned on Instagram alongside a photo which fans quickly noted was a 'blast from the past'.

The black and white snap showed Sally during her first stint in Corrie, from 1986 when she made her debut as the foster daughter of Rita to 1991, alongside Martin Platt, played by Sean Wilson. A young Sally rested her shoulder on her co-star as they grinned for the camera in typical 80s attire.

Jenny had developed a crush on Martin while at college and the two began hanging out, though Martin was more interested in friendship rather than romance. Just after Christmas 1986, Martin accompanied Jenny to a talent contest where she won first prize. As Martin was driving her home, Jenny persuaded Martin to let her have a go at driving the car. Unfortunately, Jenny crashed the car and the accident left Martin unconscious in Weatherfield General.

He later took the blame for the crash but when Jenny's father Alan Bradley confronted him about the accident, Jenny broke down and told the truth. Jenny remained interested in Martin but that ended when the pair went grape-picking in France and Jenny fell in love with a Frenchman Patrice Podevin.

Reacting to Sally's Instagram post, Sally Carman, who plays Abi Webster in the ITV soap, said: "Oh Jenny!" alongside a string of crying laughing emojis. Nicola Stephenson, who once played Kabin papergirl Priscilla Millbanks in Corrie, wrote: "Aaaahhhh I remember her.

Fans were also quick to react. @twiggy1007 replied: "My word thats a blast from the past Jenny." @nicholls4224 said: "Jenny and Martin were perfect." @meinirann wrote: "Aaaw, I loved Jenny and Martin." @lostinnh echoed: "Aww, I always liked Martin & Jenny together."

And there were plenty of compliments. @versace.the.afghanhound commented: "Wow!!!! You certainly haven’t changed a bit!" @simonpeterlouth shared: "Your still just as beautiful now as you were then!" @charliejordan.fanxo said: "This photo is incredible. You look stunning then and now sally." @marcelle.connjamieson added: "Sally (Jenny) hasn’t aged!"

But there were also some calls for Martin to return. @notyours12789 commented: "Bring back Martin Platt #BBMP." @mitlee1701 echoed: "Bring back Martin for Jen!" Since leaving the ITV soap, Sean, who played Martin, has become an affirmed cheesemonger.

And that fact didn't appear to pass Corrie fans by as @jules_hieatt joked: "Yeah, but at least she’d have plenty of cheese if she’d stayed with Martin."
