ITV Coronation Street's Elle Mulvaney 'anxious' as plot will forever change character

Coronation Street's Elle Mulvaney admitted she was "anxious" as her character is set to become embroiled in an important storyline.

The 20-year-old soap star is renowned for her role as Amy Barlow on the Cobbles. Amy has endured a difficult year on the show after her boyfriend, Jacob Hay, fled Weatherfield to escape his villainous dad, Damon.

Amy shares a flat with Summer Spellman and her boyfriend Aaron Sandford. However, spoilers show Amy will soon be involved in a subject tackling non-consensual sex after a drunken night with Aaron.

In an episode that will be broadcast on March 3, Aaron will kiss Amy after he has a row with Summer. They will then move into bedroom where Amy starts to undress before saying she feels sick and rolling away from him.

However, Aaron continues to kiss her and makes the decision for Amy that they will have sex. Amy will later come to the realisation that she was raped as she was unable to consent to sex.

Aaron will try to convince her he did nothing wrong and the police will soon become involved. Elle said it was vital the show tackles such an important and current issue.

She said: “Initially when I was given the storyline I was quite anxious to take it on as it’s such an important issue and we wanted to get it right.

"There are so many different viewpoints from the characters but for us it was important that when we portray that night it’s clear that while Amy doesn’t say the words she definitely doesn't consent."

Elle is honoured to trusted with such an important subject and she said the plot will have a lasting impact on her character. She added: "It shows how much faith the team has in us, which in turn gives us the confidence to tackle the story. It won’t end here either, it will be interesting to see the character develop in a different way because this will stay with Amy for a long time."

Show bosses worked alongside The Schools Consent Project, to create the storyline which they hope will open up conservations surrounding sexual activity amongst young people. Producer Iain Macleod said he has been struck by the number of people who have had similar experiences to Amy.

He said: "This story will be hugely relatable and we hope it will prompt important discussions among our audience about issues around consent. The narrative will also be an engrossing, long-running examination of how Amy and Aaron deal with what happened that night and will give actors Elle Mulvaney and James Craven the chance to showcase their considerable skills.”
