ITV Coronation Street: Inside Abi and Tim stars Sally Carman and Joe Duttine's relationship - stylish home, romantic lockdown proposal, and wedding plans

Their characters are known for being mates on screen but the actors behind Abi Franklin and Tim Metcalfe are much more than that off-screen.

Avid Coronation Street fans will be aware that Sally Carman and Joe Duttine found love on the cobbles and have been in a relationship for a number of years.

Sally is best known for playing Abi in the ITV soap and her character is currently having another turbulent time after giving birth to a surprise baby this week.

The mechanic was unaware she was pregnant and went into labour at six months while in a stolen car, under the influence of drugs and alcohol - and the baby boy is the result of her one-night stand with solicitor Imran Habeeb.

Meanwhile, Tim is still recovering from having a triple heart bypass. He kept his health scare a secret from his wife Sally, played by Sally Dynevor, and the iconic soap character believed he was having an affair with neighbour and nurse Aggie Bailey.

Luckily, Sally and Joe's off-screen life is a lot less dramatic - and a lot more romantic. The loved-up couple are thought to have started their relationship in the summer of 2018. In June 2021, they posted a selfie together in a hot tub which was captioned "Three years".

They then moved into a new home together at the end of 2019. The pair share a beautiful countryside home together which they also share with their adorable dog, Fig.

Sally first shared a snap of the pair in their home from their brand new kitchen with the actress writing: "We’re in", adding the hashtags "#homesweethome" and "#thelightisntwonkyhonest".

And back in February this year, Sally took to Instagram to show off two new paintings in her living room. The oil paintings showed the land and the sea, giving a tranquil vibe to the chic space.

The image also showed a brown leather, industrial-style chair with a fluffy cream throw tossed over the back. The wooden floor had also been covered with a red patterned rug with a glimpse of a green sofa.

Romantic lockdown proposal

Joe and Sally announced the happy news that they were engaged in March 2020. Taking to Instagram at the time, Sally shared a picture of her emerald green and gold ring while the pair celebrated with champagne.

She said: "So this happened... #yes" before following up the snap with another of them celebrating with the caption: "We've got each other."

Joe also shared the news on Twitter with a sweary nod to what else is going on in the world at the time. He told his followers: "She said yes everyone, convid 19 can f**k off..." before noting his error and added: "‘Convid, covid, whuteva."

Speaking about the proposal, Sally previously told TV star Kate Thornton on her podcast White Wine Question Time : "It was while we were in lockdown and we were staying in the Dales with his sister, who has a lot of space, with, his kids.

"And he had just read a Benjamin Meyers book called The Gallows Pole, which Shane Meadows is making into a film right now.

"It's all about these coin forgers and he was banging on about this bloody book for weeks and weeks and weeks and I'm like: 'I'm glad you're enjoying that book, I won't need to read it because you've literally told me everything that happens in it!'

"And we were walking around this big field on this walk and he went: 'Kids, have a look in between the dry stone walling because you know, they used to put coins and precious things to hide them in the walls.

"'You look at that bit Jeanie, and Joseph you look at that thing, Sal why don't you get involved?' I'd had a few beers because you know, that's what we did in lockdown.

"So I'm having a look and there's this box. And I opened it. I'm like: 'No way.' And then there was another box inside. And I turned around and he was on one knee."

Sally even made him repeat his proposal, with her explaining: "And he said: 'Will you marry me?' But I made him do it again, because he went too quickly.

"I went: 'That was too quick. Do it again so I can really enjoy it.' And then we all had a big bear hug and had some champagne and it was gorgeous."

Sally and Joe have also both previously worked on Shameless but never came into contact with each other. "I didn't see him at all," she said on the same podcast. "Of if I did I didn't really pay attention to be honest."

She then joked: "To be honest I didn't really like him when I met him."

Wedding plans

Back in December, Sally opened up on the couples wedding plans and shared the reason behind their Christmas 2022 wedding.

"I’m obsessed with Christmas, so when Joe said: ‘What’s your favourite time, when would you most like to do it?’ it had to be Christmas," Sally told the Mirror.

"We’re going to have the wedding late afternoon so it will be dark and it will be lit by rows of Christmas trees and twinkly lights; I can’t wait."

Sally, 40, said they could have had the wedding during 2021 but decided to hold off due to the uncertainty around the coronavirus pandemic.

She and Joe, 51, will tie the knot in St Philip’s Church in Salford, where Sally herself was baptised two years ago. "I became a Christian later on in life, around seven years ago," she added to the publication.

"A friend shared something with me and suddenly religion made sense on another level. One of the great things about St Philip’s Church is that they do so much for the local community.

"They make Bags of Hope, which are bags full of essentials, such as toothpaste or deodorant and they walk round the streets giving them to sex workers or people who are struggling."
