ITV Coronation Street fans ponder twist as they're left fearful over Stephen's next move after stealing from Audrey

Coronation Street fans are fearing for one of the soap's most iconic characters as they 'work out' Stephen Reid's next move. As viewers of the ITV soap know, the character, who returned to Weatherfield earlier this year, is a murderer after a scuffle with Leo Tompkins saw the builder plunge to his death.

Leo, played by Joe Frost, arrived on the cobbles back in October 2021 as a new love interest for Jenny Connor. The Rovers Return landlady fell for the younger man following her split from her now late husband Johnny Connor. The pair then got engaged as Jenny finally agreed to leave her much-loved home to start a new life in Canada with Leo.

But the character's suspicions of Stephen ultimately led to his shock death. After catching him lying about staying in a hotel when he really slept in his car, Leo discovered that Stephen had also shared a kiss with his fiancee Jenny while they were on a break. Leo ended up punching Stephen and, on a mission to prove that he's a liar, he confronted him about his plan to get his hands on the equity from his mum Audrey’s house.

As he followed Leo onto the Underworld factory gantry, Leo taunted him, threatening to call Audrey. Seeing red, Stephen lunged at Leo and the pair got into a scuffle over his mobile. But it wasn't long before Stephen sent Leo plunging over the railings with the victim landing in the commercial bin below. The Canadian businessman then disposed of Leo's lifeless body and burned his clothes.

And he recently took the cover-up of his crime even further by getting access to Leo's phone and sending texts to his dad, Ted, in a bid to throw him off searching for his missing son. But during Wednesday's trip to the Corrie cobbles (October 26), Stephen returned to his money-making plans to fleece his mother, Audrey Roberts.

He successfully enlisted his ex-wife Gabrielle to pretend to be Audrey after filling out forms as part of an equity release on his mother's home, leaving Stephen with more than £200k to pay off his debts from his ex-wife. Meanwhile, Audrey was excitedly planning on signaling an equity release of her own in order to go off on a cruise with her great-grandson, Sam Blakeman.

The duo were excitedly planning a trip to Norway to see the Northern Lights bu worried he will be caught out, Stephen said to his mum: "Equity release? Mum, this is such a bad idea! It doesn't matter to me but you will get a fraction of the true value and when you die these people get the house!"

She was adamant about her decision to go away, despite other family members' disapproval. Meanwhile, Stephen once again called Gabrielle and said: "Mum, decided out of the blue to release equity from Grassmere Drive, can you believe it?" to which she commented: "You're screwed if she does," He replied: "I know! She has decided to take Sam on a cruise and start living the dream. I know what is at stake, you have got to help me! I am in a mess and don't know what to do! If she finds out what I have done, that her golden boy is a thief, it will break her heart."

While he tried to figure out a plan, Audrey and Sam were in the full throws of planning their exciting trip. Back at the Platts' home, Shona ended up making a remark about murder before the camera panned to show Stephen's face. "Living with Audrey would drive me to murder," she joked. And while it could just be a hint at Stephen's killer secret, Corrie fans were left fearing his could turn on Audrey.

@BigScotsLass tweeted: "Oh gawd! Is Stephen gonnae murder Audrey?! #Corrie." @margaretb2010 said: "So it seems Stephen will plan to murder Audrey on @itvcorrie....ffs #Corrie." @ruth_clark posted: "#corrie my guess is Stephen is going to try and bump off Audrey."

But @pam_debeauvoir actually thinks the opposite and shared: "I'm convinced more than ever that Audrey has an ace up her sleeve. A massive surprise that Stephen will never see coming. She gave him her phone for a reason. He's fallen into her trap #Corrie!" @lara_305 replied: "I completely agree! After last night's episode I'm sure that she knows about the money! There was a look in her eye that made me wonder!"
