ITV Coronation Street fans confused over where they've seen newcomer Damon Hay before

Coronation Street has recently welcomed a new face to the Cobbles but fans are confused over why he looks familiar.

Jacob Hay's dad, Damon Hay, has rocked up to the fictional street to try and be back in his son's life. He tries his best to make amendments after many years of estrangement - with Jacob admitting to Amy that he hasn't seen or heard from his dad in years.

But it seems the character actually has an ulterior motive as Damon is more interested in making his presence felt at the Bistro following Nick Tilsley's recent secret deal with Harvey Gaskell. Speaking about the new role, Damon's actor Ciarán Griffiths said: "He makes out that he's back to make amends with Jacob and he slowly starts to build up his trust, but I think that will be to let him back down again.

He added: "He's just using Jacob for his own benefit, which you get the impression he's done for a lot of his life. He's definitely trying to take over Harvey's patch and do his own thing. He doesn't want to be in Harvey's shadow, he's here for himself."

But as the character had a bigger part in the soap this evening, fans were frustrated over trying to place him. They took to Twitter to question where they had seen him before - with some figuring out that he used to play Gary Best in The Bill and Micky Maguire in Shameless.

One user said: "What’s Damon been in ?? It’s bugging me now #Corrie."

Patrick said: "Wonder if Ciaran Griffiths (Damon) will get a scene with @sallycarman1 - A little Shameless reunion #corrie."

Eric said: "I hope Damon/Gary Best isn’t like his character in #TheBill he was very irritating #corrie @itvcorrie."

It is unsure how long the character will be around for as Ciarán hinted that Damon could make a sudden, quick exit. He said: "I think he'll hang onto his stake at the Bistro for as long as he can, but if it gets too hot to handle he'll vanish in a flash and leave everyone else to pick up the pieces."
