Italy vs Northern Ireland LIVE

Italy will contest a World Cup play-off final after beating Northern Ireland in the semi-finals on Thursday. Sandro Tonali broke the deadlock with a fine strike shortly before the hour mark, capping off a period of sustained pressure from the Azzurri, before Moise Kean made the game safe ten minutes from time.

The dream of qualifying for a first World Cup in 40 years is now over for the Green and White Army as a youthful side without Conor Bradley and Dan Ballard through injury were ultimately undone in the second half. Meanwhile, the Azzurri, who have missed out on qualifying for the last two World Cups, are now one step closer to ending their hiatus from the tournament.

Italy are now one win way from sealing a place at the 2026 World Cup, and with face either Wales or Bosnia and Herzegovina in the play-off final next Tuesday for the right to join Canada, Qatar and Switzerland in Group B at this summer’s showpiece event. Liverpool forward Federico Chiesa has withdrawn from the Italy squad ahead of their World Cup play-off semi-final against Northern Ireland.

Chiesa was a shock inclusion in the Azzurri squad for the March internationals having struggled for game time at Liverpool this season, which has been the case ever since joining from Juventus in the summer of 2025.

However, Chiesa has been denied the chance to make his first Italy appearance since Euro 2024.

It was announced by the Italian Football Federation on Monday that the 28-year-old left the training camp and has returned to Liverpool upon being assessed by the medical staff.

Predicted Italy XI

18:05 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Former West Ham striker Gianluca Scamacca is definitely not fit for the semi-final, so Moise Kean and Mateo Retegui are expected to start up front.

This means Inter striker Francesco Pio Esposito will have to settle for a place on the bench despite three goals in five senior caps for the national team.

Predicted Italy XI: Donnarumma; Calafiori, Mancini, Bastoni; Politano, Locatelli, Tonali, Barella, Dimarco; Kean, Retegui.

The defender came off the bench at Wembley Stadium on Sunday, but was unable to help his team avoid a 2-0 defeat to Manchester City.

Calafiori was soon on a plane to the Italy national team camp, where he has joined up with his Azzurri team-mates as they look to secure their spot at the summer World Cup via the play-offs.

Italy head coach Gennaro Gattuso revealed on Monday that Calafiori had arrived complaining of “a little pain”.

O'Neill: Italy have everything to lose

17:55 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Northern Ireland manager Michael O’Neill believes his side can play with freedom as they look to cause a huge shock against Italy.

"We can't really use (the pressure), they have to deal with it,” said O’Neill during a press conference. "That's the reality of the situation

"If you look at this group, they had a change of manager after two games, Gennaro Gattuso has been in for six games.

"They lost their last game 4-1 in the San Siro against Norway, a game where they played well in the first half and led 1-0, but would have been disappointed with how the game finished.

"That's all for them to deal with, we can talk about it but it doesn't really mean anything.

"If you look at this game, we're the team with everything to gain, they're the team with everything to lose.

"They have a lot of expectation as a football nation and they'll have to deal with that, but that's for them, we can't really use it.

"We've just got to make the game as difficult for the opposition as possible...then those types of things will become factors in the game.”
