Anyone heading to Italy this summer is being urged to monitor plans closely, after Ryanair cancelled a number of flights to and from the holiday hotspot.
The budget airline announced it would be calling off certain routes in response to the Italian handling strike going ahead on Tuesday, June 20, with all affected passengers notified by e-mail.
Baggage handling and air traffic control staff have walked out today for 24 hours and more industrial action planned next month.
Ryanair's statement read: "Due to the Italian Handling Strike on Tuesday, 20 June 2023, Ryanair regrets to inform customers that it has been forced to cancel a small number of flights to and from Italy on Tuesday, 20th June 2023."
Italian publication The Local reports that unions have called for pay rises in line with inflation, contractual holiday allowance and general improvement in conditions for ground and transport staff. More striking is set to happen on on July 15, as Italian air tarffic controllers due to walk out again with more cancellations and delays anticipated.
While no further dates are confirmed yet, more are likely to happen until disputes are resolved. Travellers are being urged to monitor developments and to keep up to date with their booked airline's news.
Italy's public transport will also be impacted by industrial action, as Euronews reports that staff across the country will strike for 24 hours on July 7, affecting trains, ferries and metro services. Disruption levels will vary and holidaymakers should keep an eye on local news reports, as well as checking in with travel providers.
Public transport will be affected from midnight on July 6 until the beginning of service on July 7 then again from 8:30 am to 5pm and 8pm to midnight. Minimum service is guaranteed from the beginning of service on July 7 until 8:29 am and from 5:01 pm to 7:59 pm.
On May 10, there were talks of strikes at Glasgow airport, with concerns over possible travel chaos. However, a deal was struck with staff accepting 11 per cent pay rises, thus cancelling planned industrial action.
