Italy legend backs Scott McTominay & Billy Gilmour to win Serie A with Napoli

Gianfranco Zola believes Scotland's talisman Scott McTominay can help lead Napoli to the Scudetto.

The Italy and Chelsea legend won the Serie A title alongside Diego Maradona in Naples in 1990.

Now, just two years after Napoli's last title triumph, Zola believes Scots McTominay and Billy Gilmour could help land another major trophy for his former side.

The former scored in Sunday night's 1-1 draw in the San Siro with rivals Inter Milan.

The ex-Manchester United player prodded home from close range after a well-worked corner.

The point kept Napoli top of the pile, with a whole host of clubs - including Inter - just a point behind.

Zola believes something special is brewing under Antonio Conte.

He told the Scottish Sun: “The Napoli fans have been very satisfied with them so far as they have been doing well

“Naples is a particular place. When things go well, like they are going at the moment, the city pushes the players on.

“The atmosphere and participation of the crowd is fantastic.

“It can work both ways. Luckily, at the moment it is going well, and the crowd is a positive factor for the team and for the players.

“They are pushing the team forward a lot just now.”

On his brief encounters with Billy Gilmour during his time as a coach at Chelsea working under Maurizio Sarri, Zola added: “Billy came a few times and trained with us. I remember him quite well.

“He has always been a good player, very intelligent and with good technique.

“Gilmour has always had a good understanding of the game.

“After his experience at Chelsea and Brighton, he is much more mature and prepared.

“I have been quite impressed by his progress since then.

“I don’t know if Antonio Conte knew him from Chelsea, because he was already gone by that time.

“But for sure he’s had good information about him. What he did for Brighton will have convinced him that he can also do a good job for Napoli.

“Gilmour is similar to Stanislav Lobotka so they can interchange quite easily.

“I must say I’m sure Antonio can help him grow even more.

“He works very well with the players, and he will help Billy to improve even more.”
