Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni welcomed President Biden and other world leaders at the G-7 summit opening session in Italy on Thursday against the backdrop of multiple global conflicts.
The G-7, held in Italy’s southern Puglia region, brings together the leaders of Italy, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the U.S., as well as the European Union (EU).
The summit follows the recent EU elections where Meloni’s Brothers of Italy Party secured a significant victory, positioning her strongly both domestically and internationally.
Stefano Vaccara, founder of the digital daily La Voce di New York, highlighted Meloni's vision for Italy to have a prominent role in influencing the EU's direction and fostering a special relationship with the U.S.
Italy's first female prime minister has emerged as a key figure in European politics, steering the continent towards a rightward shift. Meloni's government has been a staunch U.S. ally, supporting Ukraine and withdrawing from China’s Belt and Road Initiative.
The G-7 summit will address pressing global issues such as climate change, Africa, and development, with a particular focus on the conflicts in Gaza and Ukraine.
President Biden aims to provide Ukraine with additional aid amid the ongoing Russian offensive, with Meloni standing firmly in support of Ukraine. The G-7 leaders, including Meloni, endorsed President Biden's plan for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and a pathway towards a two-state solution.
The summit, set to conclude on June 15, underscores Meloni's growing influence on the international stage and her pivotal role in shaping European and global policies.
