A large section of Sulwood Drive will remain closed until September after roadworks which were meant to be completed by now have not been finished.
The roadworks, including new traffic lights at the intersection of Mannheim Drive, were scheduled to be finished by now and Sulwood Drive re-opened on August 5.
Sulwood Drive has been closed in both directions between Inkster Street and Livingston Avenue for more than three months, since May 6.
City Services this week gave an update on the roadworks, saying the problems it was now tackling could not have been predicted.
The road was now "expected to reopen in September".
"Unfortunately, during the construction to date the crews have encountered conditions underneath the original road surface which mean further work is required prior to laying a new surface," the statement read.
"The conditions have meant the crews have had to do further excavation work and bring in new materials to build up the foundations on which the new road pavement will be laid.
"It was not possible to predict this would happen as pre-site inspections cannot fully determine what will be found underground.
"This work has added to the time it is taking to deliver the first stage of works and is why the current temporary road closure on Sulwood Drive needs to be extended.
"This means the new road will have a strong foundation suitable for the level of use, including volume and type of traffic, that is seen on the road. It will be able to serve the community well for many years into the future without the disruptive issues it has experienced previously."
City Services said "good progress has been made on the upgrade including":
- electrical work for the new traffic lights and streetlights
- installation of new streetlight poles
- pouring several hundred metres of new concrete kerb and gutters
- new entry and exit points for the Mount Taylor carpark
- pavement widening for the carpark exit and new right turn lane into the carpark
- installation of new stormwater infrastructure
- starting path works near the intersection of Mannheim Street.
The site compound and associated storage facilities are located in the grassed area along Sulwood Drive near the Mannheim Street intersection for the duration of the project.
