When it was announced last year that Scrubs would be revived for the 2026 TV schedule, it was inevitable that plenty of new characters would be introduced to accompany the familiar faces. That includes a core group of interns, two of them being Jacob Dudman’s Asher and Layla Mohammadi’s Layla. Both actors talked with CinemaBlend about what they freaked out about the most when they walked on to the new Scrubs set for the first time.
This came up in my conversation with Dudman and Mohammadi after they opened up about how Asher and Layla’s romance has already hit a snag. When I asked the two of them what they fanned out over when they started working on Scrubs, Mohammdi started off by saying:
Yeah, the first day that I got to Vancouver, I think all of us had little meetings with Zach in the beginning, and he walked me to the hospital, and I was binging the show at the time. So walking through Sacred Heart after being home watching it every day, it was just a surreal thing because it looked exactly the same. I remember the penthouse and the on-call room was a newer edition, so things were changed a little bit for modern times, but it was an exact replica. So that was crazy, and just hearing Zach and Sarah and Donald tell all the stories of them remembering exactly where things were, that was a surreal thing for sure in the beginning.
The Scrubs revival premiered 16 years after the original, which I consider to be one of the best sitcoms of all time, ended with the polarizing ninth season. But even if I didn’t regularly watching the show in my younger years, if I was in Layla Mohammadi’s shoes, I also would have carved out time to watch some of the best Scrubs episodes to prepare for working on it. Either way, I don’t blame her for being amazed by how closely the revival’s sets matched the ones from roughly 20 years ago, not to mention hearing Zach Braff, Donald Faison and Sarah Chalke reflect on their first round of Scrubs.
Jacob Dudman was also impressed by the Scrubs revival’s sets, although he specifically honed in on the ones created for the show’s trademark fantasy sequences. In his words:
I was gonna say exactly the same thing. I mean, I'm a real geek for anything production-related, and seeing the set, and also the sets that are made specifically for fantasies. We’ve got the wrestling ring, the James Bond casino, those things that are built and then deconstructed within three days for the sake of a 15-second gag. It was incredible. So that was the thing I was mainly geeking out over, and the stories like Layla says that the OGs would share with us, which helped us sort of come together as a family.
This makes me all the more hopeful that Scrubs 2.0 continues. This current season only consists of nine episodes, meaning there are only two left. Considering how well the first two episodes performed, ideally this will be enough for ABC to greenlight another season. That way, not only will be able to spend more time in Sacred Heart, we’ll get to see more of these fantasy sets that are made and unmade within just days. I also wouldn’t mind getting to visit the sets myself… just putting that out there, ABC.
