Some were made for him, with United States duo Tyler Adams and Brenden Aaronson unavailable following their participation at the World Cup. As Patrick Bamford remains injured, top scorer Rodrigo leads the line in his native country.
Interestingly, Robin Koch, Junior Firpo and Diego Llorente, despite travelling with the squad, all missed out on the matchday squad. Joe Geldhart also features in the starting line-up but it is unclear until kick-off whether he will play alongside Rodrigo or in the number 10 role.
Supporters appeared torn over the XI once the team news was announced. This is how Leeds fans reacted on social media.
@Ash_LUFC: Here we go, looking forward to seeing Leeds back!
@MOTtweets1919: Joffy in behind a striker? Fantastic stuff. Hope it works. Not seen it enough and friendlies are the time to try these things
@MattyLUFC_: Third season in the Premier League and Adam Forshaw is our third-choice midfielder. Honest to god
@zacsmidnights: Why the is Gnonto not starting? I would prefer him over Harrison!
@Dar1901gk: W lineup, just confirms that Drameh is indeed leaving in January though. Should be starting over Ayling.
@MttChlk: Everyone questioning line up choices, it’s a friendly.
