It feels like this will be the year that lots of NFL fans get to laugh really hard at the Patriots

This is the online version of our daily newsletter, The Morning WinSubscribe to get irreverent and incisive sports stories, delivered to your mailbox every morning.

We are only one week into the 2022 NFL season but that doesn’t mean it’s too early to jump to conclusions. That’s what’s we do with football!

So let’s jump to what looks like an easy one, shall we – Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots are a bad football team and will continue to be a bad football team this season.

While that’s bad news for the folks in the Boston area who had grown used to Tawwmy Brady winning Super Bowls, it’s very fun news for all the football fans who don’t call Boston home and don’t root for the greatest organization in NFL history.

We heard all training camp about how Belichick was handing over the offensive play-calling duties to either Matt Patricia, a former defensive coordinator who failed as a head coach in Detroit, or Joe Judge, a special teams coach who failed miserably as a head coach of the Giants.

Well, Patricia got those duties in Week 1 and the Patriots look terrible throughout their 20-7 loss to Tua Tagovailoa and the Dolphins. It was an ugly loss for a team that looks lost.

Mac Jones was average and suffered a back injury in the defeat.

Kendrick Bourne, one of their best receivers, was basically benched for who knows why.

And Joe Judge wore a hoodie on the sidelines in 100 degree heat because apparently he wants to come across as a fake football tough guy. Seriously, he should be fired for wearing a hoodie in Miami in September. It was a childish look and an embarrassment to the team.

Now the Patriots play the 1-0 Steelers in Pittsburgh in Week 2 and you have to think Mike Tomlin and Co. would like nothing more than to beat down the Patriots (which they could never really do when Brady was around) and send the franchise, and fanbase, into an even darker place than they fell into after the Miami loss.

Belichick will always be regarded as one of the best coaches to ever walk a NFL sideline but he has his work cutout for him this year more than he has in any year in New England and so far it looks like he’s making a lot of terrible decisions, much to the delight of lots and lots of NFL fans.

And it could only get worse in New England. In a hurry.
