Israel's public universities have raised alarm over a recent increase in violence, antisemitism, and anti-Israel sentiment at universities in the United States. The Association of University Heads, Israel (VERA), issued a statement expressing deep concern about the situation.
The university presidents highlighted that violent demonstrations have created an environment where Jewish and Israeli students feel threatened. Some students and faculty members have reportedly felt the need to conceal their identities or avoid campus altogether due to fears of physical harm.
While emphasizing the importance of freedom of expression and the right to demonstrate in a democratic society, VERA underscored that these freedoms do not extend to violence, threats against communities, or calls for the destruction of the State of Israel.
Despite the concerns raised by Israeli university heads, it is noted that the majority of protests have been conducted in a peaceful manner. While some social media posts and actions have made Jewish students feel unsafe, reports indicate that most protesters have engaged in nonviolent demonstrations.
VERA also pledged to support Jewish and Israeli students who wish to pursue their academic endeavors in Israeli universities, offering them a welcoming academic and personal environment.
The university heads' statement serves as a call for maintaining a balance between freedom of expression and ensuring the safety and well-being of all students on university campuses.
