Although the ceasefire deal has not been formally announced, it is anticipated that the proposed 60-day cessation of hostilities aims to implement UN Security Council Resolution 1701, with the aspiration of establishing a lasting truce in the region.
UN Security Council Resolution 1701 was originally adopted to bring an end to a 34-day war between Israel and Lebanon back in 2006. This resolution has played a crucial role in maintaining relative calm in the area for nearly two decades.
Prior to the security cabinet's vote, Israel intensified its airstrikes on Beirut, targeting central areas of the city for the first time in the conflict, in addition to the Hezbollah-dominated southern suburbs. The Lebanese health ministry confirmed that at least 10 individuals lost their lives in the strikes on central Beirut.
