Israeli soccer fans were involved in a serious incident of violence in Amsterdam overnight into Friday. The fans, supporting Maccabi Tel Aviv, were ambushed and attacked as they left the stadium following a Europa League game against Dutch side Ajax. The Israeli embassy to the United States shared social media videos showing the violence against the fans.
Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar reported that 10 citizens were injured and advised citizens to stay in their hotels. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described the violence as serious and ordered the immediate release of two rescue planes to assist affected citizens. He also called on Dutch authorities to act firmly and quickly against the rioters to ensure the safety of Israeli citizens.
Amsterdam’s police had increased their presence in the city center due to tensions ahead of the soccer match. They prevented a confrontation between taxi drivers and visitors and reported an incident where a Palestinian flag was torn down by unknown perpetrators. Additionally, a demonstration was planned near the stadium before the match between Ajax and Maccabi Tel Aviv.
Israel’s foreign ministry stated that about thirty people have been arrested in connection with the violence. The situation was reported to be calming down, but the government is taking measures to evacuate affected citizens and ensure their safety.
