Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed to take action against Hezbollah following a tragic rocket attack that resulted in the deaths of 12 children and left many others wounded. The attack occurred when a Hezbollah rocket struck a soccer field in northern Israel, where children were running towards a bomb shelter in a Druze community.
Netanyahu, who was in the U.S. at the time, immediately cut short his trip and began his journey back to Israel. Expressing his horror at the incident, he stated, 'Citizens of Israel, like you, I was horrified to see the terrible images following Hezbollah’s murderous attack on Majdal Shams. Our hearts are all broken by these scenes.'
Upon his return, Netanyahu pledged that Israel would not remain silent and promised to convene the security cabinet to address the situation. Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant and IDF's Chief of the General Staff, LTG Herzi Halevi, conducted a situational assessment following the attack.
The IDF reported that approximately 30 projectiles crossed into Israel from Lebanon on the day of the attack. Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz indicated a potential escalation, stating, 'We are approaching the moment of an all-out war in the north against Hezbollah, and we will react in a disproportionate way.'
The Biden White House condemned the strike, expressing support for Israeli security and denouncing the attack that claimed the lives of teenagers and children. The statement affirmed the U.S.'s unwavering support for Israel's security against all threats, particularly from Iranian-backed terrorist groups like Hezbollah.
