Israeli PM Rival Gantz Meets US Leaders On Gaza War

Benny Gantz speaks at the announcement of former IDF chief Gadi Eisenkot's election bid in Ramat Gan, Israel, on Aug. 14, 2022. Gantz, Eisenkot and Gideon Sa'ar have teamed up for the November

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's top political rival, Benny Gantz, is currently in Washington engaging with U.S. leaders to discuss the ongoing conflict in Gaza. Gantz, a prominent member of Israel's War Cabinet, has been gaining popularity and is seen as a key figure in shaping the country's future.

Gantz, aged 64, is known for his centrist political stance and joined Netanyahu's government following an attack by Hamas on Israel. This move was aimed at fostering national unity as Israel confronts Hamas in Gaza. Recent polls indicate a surge in public support for Gantz, with indications that he could potentially become the next prime minister if elections were held today.

In contrast, Netanyahu's approval ratings have plummeted, with many Israelis holding him responsible for the failure to prevent the deadly Hamas attack that claimed the lives of over 1,200 Israelis, predominantly civilians.

Gantz's visit to Washington has drawn criticism from Netanyahu, underscoring the growing divide within the Israeli government. It is widely speculated that Gantz may exit the government once the intense conflict subsides, signaling the end of the period of national unity.

While Gantz's departure may not lead to the collapse of the government, it could trigger a resurgence of mass anti-government protests that were prevalent before the Hamas attack. Such demonstrations could escalate pressure on Netanyahu's unpopular coalition to call for early elections.

Having been a prominent political rival of Netanyahu for several years, Gantz's role in the War Cabinet has been instrumental in providing a moderating influence within the right-wing government. He has advocated for the release of hostages held in Gaza and has worked to strengthen Israel's ties with the U.S., which has been a crucial ally during the conflict.

Gantz, who leads the National Unity faction in parliament, transitioned to politics in 2018 after a distinguished military career. His entry into politics coincided with a period of significant political instability in Israel, marked by multiple elections that served as referendums on Netanyahu's leadership amidst corruption allegations.

While Gantz has held positions such as defense minister and overseen military operations in Gaza, his stance on Palestinian statehood remains somewhat ambiguous. However, his engagements with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas indicate a willingness to explore diplomatic avenues for peace.
