Israeli war cabinet minister Benny Gantz has publicly called for parliamentary elections in September during a briefing on Wednesday. Gantz emphasized the importance of unity and trust among the public in facing the challenges ahead, referencing recent events that have impacted the country.

Gantz, a key political rival of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, has been vocal about the need for a fresh mandate from the public. He has informed Netanyahu of his request for elections but did not confirm whether he would leave the coalition if an election date is not agreed upon.

This is not the first time a call for new elections has come from within the war cabinet. Minister Gadi Eisenkot also previously advocated for elections to restore trust, citing a lack of confidence in the current leadership.

The push for elections comes amidst public protests in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, reflecting growing discontent with Netanyahu's leadership. The Likud party, Netanyahu's party, has criticized Gantz's call for elections, accusing him of engaging in 'petty politics' during a time of war.

The Likud party warned that holding elections now could lead to division and hinder ongoing military efforts in Rafah. They emphasized the need to focus on achieving the goals of the war before considering any political changes.
