Israel's military conducted a strike on an underground tunnel crossing along the Lebanese-Syrian border on Thursday with the aim of preventing the smuggling of weapons into Lebanese territories. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) revealed that the tunnel's operations were overseen by the 4400 Unit, responsible for transporting weapons from Iran and its proxies to Hezbollah in Lebanon.
The IDF further stated that infrastructure sites near the Masnaa border crossing between Syria and Lebanon were targeted in the operation. The strike, which took place late on Thursday, resulted in the destruction of the road leading to the Masnaa crossing with Syria, according to Lebanese Public Works Minister Ali Hamie. As a consequence, the checkpoint has been rendered inaccessible.
The Masnaa border crossing, situated in the Beqaa valley on the Beirut-Damascus international highway, serves as a crucial transport route for people and goods moving between Lebanon and Syria. The recent Israeli airstrike near this border crossing has disrupted traffic in both directions, impacting the movement of tens of thousands of individuals who have been using the highway to escape Israeli bombardment in the region.
