Israeli forces involved in the recent strikes in Gaza that tragically resulted in the deaths of seven World Central Kitchen (WCK) staff have provided insight into the circumstances surrounding the incident. According to a spokesperson for the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), the fatal mistake was made when the IDF misidentified an object slung over one of the passenger's shoulders as a weapon. It was later determined that the object was likely a bag, not a weapon.
The spokesperson further explained that the surveillance drones used by the IDF were unable to discern the WCK logo on the vehicles during the nighttime operation. As a result of this oversight, the IDF is now considering the distribution of thermal stickers for aid vehicles to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
Additionally, the spokesperson confirmed that some of the aid workers in the convoy managed to survive the initial strike on the first vehicle by fleeing to the next vehicle in the convoy. This harrowing escape underscores the chaotic and dangerous nature of the situation.
