Israel Working To Increase Humanitarian Aid To Gaza

A ship carrying aid sails off the shore of Gaza, as seen from central Gaza Strip

A top United Nations humanitarian official has acknowledged that Israel is making efforts to boost humanitarian aid into Gaza, although not all announced measures have been fully implemented yet.

The UN’s humanitarian coordinator in Jerusalem, expressed gratitude for the recent announcements made by Israel but highlighted that more action is needed to facilitate aid operations within Gaza.

Israel's plan to enhance aid delivery includes the construction of a new land crossing between Israel and northern Gaza, as well as a commitment to increase aid deliveries to the region.

While the Israeli Defense Forces have reported a doubling in the number of trucks entering Gaza compared to the previous week, the UN agency responsible for tracking aid flow into Gaza has not observed a similar increase.

The logistical challenges involved in delivering aid to Gaza were emphasized by the UN official, who explained that the process of unloading, segregating, and distributing aid items from incoming trucks is complex and time-consuming.

Furthermore, restrictions on movement within Gaza imposed by Israel have added to the difficulties of aid distribution in the region.

The humanitarian coordinator warned of a looming hunger crisis in Gaza, with projections indicating that half of the population could face catastrophic hunger by mid-July if immediate action is not taken to address the food insecurity affecting all 2.2 million residents.
