A close ally of Israeli prime minister-designate Benjamin Netanyahu has been elected as the new speaker of Israel’s parliament, marking a step closer to the formation of what is expected to be the most right-wing government in the country’s history.
Yariv Levin, a senior member of Netanyahu’s right-wing Likud party, was chosen on Tuesday to replace Mickey Levy, from the outgoing Prime Minister Yair Lapid’s Yesh Atid party, as the speaker.
