Israel's military has issued an apology for the unfortunate incident that resulted in the deaths of three Lebanese soldiers during an Israeli strike on Sunday. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) explained that the strike targeted a Lebanese army truck in Hanine, southern Lebanon, after the vehicle entered an area where the IDF had previously targeted a Hezbollah truck transporting weapons.
In a statement, the IDF clarified that they were unaware of the presence of the Lebanese army truck in the area and emphasized that their operations were not directed against the Lebanese Army. The IDF expressed regret for the unintended consequences of the strike.
It is important to note that the Lebanese army is not actively involved in the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah. However, since the recent escalation of hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah, a total of eight Lebanese army soldiers have lost their lives. Additionally, sixteen off-duty Lebanese army troops have also been reported killed.
The incident underscores the complexities and risks involved in the ongoing conflict in the region. Both Israel and Lebanon have expressed a desire to avoid further escalation and maintain stability along their shared border.
