The new Isle of Man Ferry terminal is now scheduled to be completed by the autumn but wont start passenger services until March 2024 at the earliest.
The terminal is the Isle of Man’s first ever development project away from its own shores and is set to be symbolic of a new “long term relationship” between the island and Liverpool. However the development has hit a number of delays since works began in November 2019 with an original completion date of August 2021.
The Manx Government previously cited the pandemic and its impact on the construction industry for the delay and hoped to complete the new facility by summer 2023 following the disruption. This target has now been moved again with encompassing works on the project now expected to have been carried out in full by autumn of this year - with passenger services planned for the end of March 2024.

The terminal buildings, passenger facilities and further land based work are set to be completed this summer, but the Manx Government said that remaining “marine works” are the cause of the added delay. In a fresh update on the terminal’s progress, it said that “marine works continue to present challenges due to the testing environment.”
It added that 70% of the marine works have been completed thanks to improvements in the weather, but currently projections mean this will not be completed in time to start passenger services this year. The marine works include providing “scour protection” for vessels arriving at the new state-of-the-art terminal, with the Government adding that “all marine works are estimated for completion in the autumn.”
The overall costs of the project has risen significantly over the last few years. The terminal is said to be costing the Manx Government the region of £70m, almost double the original projection of around £38m.
The first vessel to use the terminal will be the Steam Packet’s fast craft Manannan, expected to be in passenger service by the end of March 2024. The newly-built Manxman, currently en route to the Island from South Korea, is set to undertake berthing trials in Liverpool later in 2024 prior to the start of the winter weekend sailings schedule.
