Waking up feeling worse for wear? You could be suffering from the ‘false rest’ effect

Think of your sleep like a meal. You could sit at a dinner table for an hour, but if you’re just eating empty calories — or, more accurately, if you’re interrupted every three minutes — you’re not going to leave the table feeling nourished. The same is true of sleep.

Rest isn’t laziness or indulgence; it’s a biological and psychological necessity. Quality sleep helps regulate the nervous system, recharges you emotionally and builds resilience. Without it, everything from mood and motivation to focus and relationships can begin to suffer. Yet despite spending enough time in bed, many people still wake up feeling exhausted.
