Is VAR being used at the World Cup 2022?

Video Assistant Referee technology will return for it's second FIFA World Cup at Qatar 2022 after making it's debut four years go at Russia 2018.

The tournament gets underway on Sunday 20 November, with it being the first ever winter World Cup, and VAR will be in use once again with the technology now an established factor of most elite level football competitions.

FIFA also announced back in July that semi-automated offside technology will be in use in Qatar, 'offering a support tool for the video match officials and the on-field officials to help them make faster, more accurate and more reproducible offside decisions on the biggest stage of all.'

Even though four years on since it's introduction at the World Cup, with Russia 2018 the first domestic or international competition to use it, VAR is still surrounded by masses of controversy and supporters will be keen to see it used efficiently and correctly during the tournament.

Ironically, the eventual winners of the last World Cup France were the first beneficiaries of VAR as Didier Deschamps' side were awarded a penalty in their opening match against Australia which they won 2-1.

VAR also awarded Les Bleus a penalty in their 4-2 final victory against Croatia as well as making other major calls throughout the tournament.

Four years on though and supporters are used to having VAR in matches with the 2022/23 season the fourth Premier League campaign to have the technology, albeit still incredibly controversial.
