Is this rich hue replacing red for 2025? Meet Glidden's Color of The Year 'Purple Basil'

Glidden color of the year 'purple basil' 2025.

Something rather strange is happening to my personal, tried-and-true interior design style. While I have long been a lover of neutrals (granted just the warmer ones) 2024 has certainly been a year of embracing richer and more joy-provoking hues.

Purple, to my surprise, is among the colors that I'm warming to this fall. And as deep, bold, and earthy color trends are dominating the remainder of 2024 – and we hit the full swing of Color of The Year season – it's not much of a surprise that Glidden has just declared their winning shade for 2025 as Purple Basil.

Decidedly retro, this plum-purple hue is moody, elegant, and good enough to eat. Here's why we feel so excited about the new way to do purple in 2025.

Decorating with purple is not for the faint of heart. And while you don't have to color drench an entire room with it, pops of purple can really be welcomed no matter your palette.

A far cry from Glidden's 2024 Color of The Year – a honey-toned beige named Limitless Purple Basil is a dark purple that really makes a statement. 'Purple isn't just permitted, it’s encouraged,' Glidden declared, perfectly summing up our previous affliction for this '70s-inspired scheme.

Purple room ideas are pretty divisive. You either love purple (like, really love it) or hate it with a passion. 'In the year ahead this trend will lead us to unapologetically embrace the rich warmth and energy delivered by colors like Purple Basil.'

When considering what colors go with purple, you can of course embrace this deep eggplant shade's nostalgic feel with vibrant greens, blues, and chocolate browns, or, try a subtler color combination of neutrals accented with pops of plum.

H&G's Head of Interiors Hebe Hatton agrees. 'As someone who solely decorates with neutrals, the idea of decorating with a dark purple was never on my radar,' she explains. 'But then earlier in the year I noticed I was being drawn to red to add pops of grown-up color to my rooms (blame the unexpected red theory) and then red became a gateway color to falling in love which deep rich colors that work so well in my neutral schemes – dark greens, blue and yes purples!'

'As we have shifted into fall I am seeing these once popular wine red tones turn even more purple. Merlots, burgundies, and purples are the colors for fall 2024 and beyond and I am very much here for it,' says Hebe.

Whether you're embarking on a new paint project or looking to add some unexpected pops of color, its time to lean into purple in 2025.
