Is there extra time in FA Cup third round replays? Penalty rules explained

Six Premier League teams crashed out in the third round of the FA Cup, with Chelsea beaten 4-0 by Manchester City in a white-wash at the Etihad. Meanwhile Tottenham safely progressed with a 1-0 win over Portsmouth and Arsenal saw off League One side Oxford United in a 3-0 triumph

Antonio Conte's side were then the second out of the hat during the third-round draw and will travel to Deepdale to face Preston, whilst Mikel Arteta's men will take on Manchester City in an all-Premier League clash at the Etihad.

But before then, there are a number of third round replays which need to be played. Fixtures are taking place across Tuesday and Wednesday. Here are the rules for those matches and as well as all the key information you need regarding the fourth round ties.

Is there extra time in replays?

If a replay finishes level at the end of 90 minutes, the tie will go to extra-time. If two sides still cannot be separated after 120 minutes, there will eventually be a penalty shootout to decide who progresses to the next round.

When are the fourth-round ties?

The ties will be played between Friday 27th January and Monday 30th January, with fixture dates to be confirmed soon.

Are there replays in the fourth round?

In the 20/21 and 21/22 competitions, the FA scrapped replays for the third and fourth rounds due to the schedule disruption as a result of the pandemic. The decision was made to avoid further fixture congestion, but replays have now returned for rounds three and four. A draw for Spurs at Deepdale, therefore, would see them take on Preston at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in a replay.

Replays are expected to take place 10 days after the original game (Feb 7th), like in round three. If the replay finishes level at the end of 90 minutes, then the game will go to extra time and then penalties if required.

Is VAR in use?

VAR is used in the FA Cup, but only at Premier League grounds. The FA have decided against installing the technology for one-off games, meaning clubs at Championship level and below won't have it available. Tottenham's tie with Preston will of course be affected.
