Is the stock market open on Thanksgiving in 2024? The answer to this question is no. The stock market will be closed Thursday, November 28, for the Thanksgiving holiday. Bond traders will get the day off too, with bond markets also closed on Thursday.
And unlike some holidays, there are no early hours for bond traders ahead of Thanksgiving, as regular trading hours will be observed on Wednesday, November 27. However, both the stock and bond markets will close early on Black Friday, which falls on Friday, November 29, this year, at 1 pm and 2 pm Eastern time, respectively.
November has been a standout month for investors, sparked by Donald Trump's election win. As of this writing, the Dow Jones Industrial Average is up 3.6% since the start of the month, while the S&P 500 is 3.7% higher and the Nasdaq Composite is in the lead with its 3.9% gain.
But investors should be cautious about making large post-election bets, says Brent Schutte, chief investment officer at Northwestern Mutual Wealth Management Company. "Broad priorities and economic goals of an administration provide insights into a politician's thinking but don't capture the nuances that will likely emerge as a result of the give and take of the legislative process, not to mention the realities of the broader economic cycle that is ticking in the background."
Investors should instead "follow an investment plan for which an unexpected twist or turn doesn't have an outsized impact on the long-term success of achieving their financial goals," Schutte advises.
As for those wondering what time does the market open for regular trading hours, both the Nasdaq Stock Market and the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) run from 9:30 am to 4:00 pm Eastern time Monday through Friday.
Are banks open on Thanksgiving? The answer to that question is no. Thursday, November 28, is one of several bank holidays in 2024, and so banks will be closed.
