Is Spotify down? 'Bug' causes music app to crash when connected to Bluetooth headphones

Spotify is having problems following a recent update to the music streaming app on iPhone.

Numerous Spotify users have reported issues with the service on social media platforms Reddit and X (formerly Twitter).

The most common complaint is that the music streaming app crashes when connected to wireless headphones including Apple’s AirPods.

Internet outage tracker Down Detector is also detecting possible issues with the service after a steady stream of user reports in the past few hours.

The issues started after Spotify updated its iOS app on Tuesday, July 30. Titled version 8.9.60, the update makes unspecified “changes and improvements” to Spotify, according to its iOS App Store description.

It could also be related to Apple’s iOS 17.6 software update on Monday (July 29).

Spotify is aware of the issue, according to its community support website

“We've received reports that iOS users of free accounts are experiencing app crashing when they try to connect their device to their AirPods via Bluetooth,” the company states on the official forum.

Confused users have taken to social media to seek help from others and Spotify.

“The @Spotify app has a bug where if you use Bluetooth headphones the app crashes the second you open it??” said one user on X, who also shared a video of the app repeatedly shutting down after connecting Bluetooth headphones.

“Dude is anybody else having an issue where their Spotify app legit refuses to work and crashes immediately upon opening ONLY when Bluetooth earbuds are connected to the device,” another person said on X.

“I’ve logged out and it works up until you close the app and I’ve tried clean re-installing and nothing seems to work and it just started after I updated to iOS 17.6,” said someone on the Spotify community support forum.

As it turns out, there may be a relatively straightforward fix that can temporarily fix the problem for users while they wait for Spotify to patch it. According to a comment on a Reddit post about the issue, if you log out and log in again to your account and then use Bluetooth, the app should stop crashing.

We’ve contacted Spotify for comment.

In other Spotify news, the company has backtracked on its controversial decision to restrict lyrics to paying subscribers.

The streaming giant sparked outrage among free users in May when it introduced a cap of three lyric views per month. The move was widely seen as a cynical attempt to bolster Premium subscriptions.

However, after a barrage of complaints, Spotify announced it would lift the tight restrictions. While the exact details of the new limit have yet to be revealed, it should be much higher than the previous one.
