While MTB has remained above its 200-day moving average since late March, indicating a sustained uptrend, it recently fell below its 50-day moving average in mid-August, pointing to some near-term weakness.
M&T Bank’s outperformance may partly reflect improving earnings, loan growth and asset quality. On July 15, M&T Bank reported its second-quarter results, with record EPS of $5.32, up 25.5% from a year earlier. Taxable-equivalent net interest income increased 4.8% year over year to $1.80 billion, while total average loan balances grew 4.4%, led by an 8.2% increase in commercial and industrial loans.
Meanwhile, nonaccrual loans fell 23.2% year over year to $1.2 billion, indicating improved asset quality. Following the Q2 results, MTB shares jumped 2.8% in the same trading session.
U.S. Bancorp (USB), one of MTB’s key competitors, has gained 16.9% year-to-date, underperforming MTB. Moreover, USB shares have climbed 26.6% over the past 52 weeks, outpacing MTB over the same period.
Wall Street analysts remain somewhat bullish on MTB’s prospects. The stock carries a consensus “Moderate Buy” rating from the 21 analysts covering it. The mean price target of $260.98 implies 9.7% upside from its current price.
