Is ITV's Karen Pirie a true story? Viewers ask same question as new Sunday night drama continues

There's another drama to get stuck into on Sunday night as ITV's Karen Pirie continues. And, after seeing preview adverts for the much hyped new series and catching the first episode last week, many viewers have been left asking the same thing - is it based on real life events?

While Vera fans are still waiting for answers on when they can expect to see the last two episodes of series 11, after the show was pulled off air mid-run earlier this year, there has been Adrian Dunbar drama Ridley to keep them occupied over the last month. That reached its conclusion on ITV on Sunday, September 18, but the good news for those whose Sunday nights aren't complete with a bit of drama before bedtime is that there's a new one hot on its heels - Karen Pirie.

Its first episode synopsis reads: "In St Andrews, three drunken students are discovered at the scene of a murder. Young barmaid Rosie Duff has been assaulted, stabbed and left for dead. And the only suspects are the three young men now stained with her blood, claiming to have stumbled across her on the way home from a party."

The unsolved murder investigation comes back to the fore 25 years later after becoming the topic of a true crime podcast and Detective Sergeant Karen Pirie, played by Lauren Lyle, is put in charge of the cold case review and tasked with delving into the mysteries that surround the case.

Is Karen Pirie on ITV a true story?

While it sounds like the kind of a case that could be the subject of an actual true crime podcast it is NOT a true story. Karen Pirie, is very much like Vera, in the fact that its based on a series of hit novels. Karen Pirie is the work of writer Val McDermid, with its first series based on Val's first Karen book The Distant Echo.

A teaser for the second episode of the three part series reads: "With suspects under attack, Karen’s cold case review has just become a live investigation overnight. But is the perpetrator Rosie’s killer, out to silence potential snitches? Or are they a wounded family member or friend, out to exact revenge? Finding the answer could give Karen her strongest hope yet of solving the case."
