Is Ireland set to be hit by snow? Met Eireann's latest forecast as freezing spell to bring big chill

Met Eireann’s forecast for the week ahead will see temperatures drop below freezing while showers of rain are due to batter some areas.

With the fluctuating temperatures expected over the coming days, the forecast shows the potential for wintry showers of sleet and snow in areas of high ground from Wednesday.

As for Monday night, outbreaks of rain and drizzle are expected, mainly over Ulster, where it will be heavy at times.

There will be a lot of dry weather elsewhere, with just a little patchy light rain and drizzle at times.

Lowest temperatures will range from 5 to 9 degrees in moderate to fresh west to northwest winds.

Tuesday will be another mostly cloudy day, “though some bright spells are likely”, especially in the morning.

There will be some dry weather for a time in many areas, however, there will still be some scattered patches of rain and drizzle, especially in northern parts.

A band of persistent rain will then push in from the northwest in the early afternoon and will gradually spread southeastwards over the course of the day, with some heavier bursts.

Wednesday is due to be a windy and showery day with fresh to strong and gusty westerly winds and widespread showers, turning heavier and more prolonged in the afternoon.

There will be sunny spells early on but it will turn cloudier by evening and highest temperatures of 8 to 11 degrees.

As nightfall arrives, many are in for a cold night with scattered showers which will be heavy at times and will turn wintry over high ground.

There is a chance that rain will develop in southern counties overnight with lowest temperatures of 0 to +3 degrees in light to moderate westerly winds.

Thursday will bring another mix of sunny spells and scattered showers, with a chance that some will turn wintry on high ground once again.

It will become cloudier on Thursday night with outbreaks of rain and drizzle mainly over the southern half of the country, while temperatures are due to plummet to between -2 to +3 degrees - coldest over Ulster.

Rain will be most prominent in the south on Friday, with sunny spells and scattered showers elsewhere.

Further forecasts currently indicate that things will remain “unsettled over the weekend with wet and blustery conditions at times.”
