Is heavy snow set to hit Ireland? Met Eireann forecast major temperature dip in cold snap

Met Eireann has issued numerous warnings for Wednesday , affecting most counties as brutal conditions are set to arrive this evening and continue overnight.

Five counties, in particular, are being advised to expect heavy rain and wind as well as localised flooding and poor driving conditions.

The orange rain alert has been in place since 3.30pm Thursday and will remain in effect until 9pm, however, conditions are set to continue into Thursday in some areas according to forecasts.

Elsewhere, a status yellow ice warning is in place for Carlow, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Longford, Meath, Offaly, Westmeath, Wexford, Wicklow, Cavan, Donegal, Monaghan, Munster, and Connacht.

Hazardous conditions are expected “due to a widespread severe frost leading to ice on untreated surfaces.”

This warning is in place from 8pm Wednesday until 10am Thursday.

According to the latest forecast, tonight will be dry and clear for some, however, “on eastern fringes outbreaks of rain will linger through the night keeping it a little milder there.”

Some areas will see patches of sleet and snow overnight as well, “but accumulations, where they do occur, will generally be small.”

It’ll be a bitterly cold night, with lowest temperatures of -3 to +3 degrees.

Hazardous conditions can be expected due to severe frost moving in over eastern parts, and some pockets of dense fog or freezing fog will also occur - mainly light variable winds.

From tomorrow morning, any frost, ice, and fog will clear early to leave a largely dry and bright morning with sunny spells.

However, clouds will build in from the Atlantic through the afternoon and evening with some patchy drizzle at times, “but it will remain dry and bright in the east until later in the day.”

Conditions will turn breezier through the day also as light to moderate southerly winds increase fresh to strong during the afternoon.
