Is Coherent Stock Outperforming the S&P 500?

With a market cap of around $58 billion, Coherent Corp. (COHR) is a global leader in photonics, harnessing the power of photons to drive innovation across datacenter, communications, and industrial markets. The company operates in more than 20 countries and provides industry-leading technologies that help customers address complex technology challenges.

Companies worth more than $10 billion are generally labeled as “large-cap” stocks and Coherent fits this criterion perfectly. With a broad technology portfolio, resilient supply chain and global scale, Coherent supports industry leaders in advancing innovation and growth.

Shares of the Saxonburg, Pennsylvania-based company have declined 29.6% from its 52-week high of $440. The stock has decreased 21.7% over the past three months, lagging behind the S&P 500 Index’s ($SPX) 1.6% gain over the same time frame.

COHR stock has surged 65.3% on a YTD basis, surpassing SPX’s 11.4% increase. In the longer term, shares of the company have climbed 182.4% over the past 52 weeks, compared to the 15% return of the SPX over the same time frame.

Yet, the stock has been trading below its 50-day moving average since late June.

Coherent has outperformed over the past year as surging demand for AI infrastructure has made its Datacenter & Communications business a major growth engine. Record backlogs, long-term supply agreements and strategic customer commitments have improved revenue visibility, while higher factory utilization and supply-chain efficiencies have strengthened profitability.

In comparison, rival Keysight Technologies, Inc. (KEYS) has lagged behind COHR stock. KEYS stock has soared 63.7% on a YTD basis and 87.7% over the past 52 weeks.

Due to the stock’s outperformance relative to the SPX over the past year, analysts remain strongly optimistic on COHR. The stock has a consensus rating of “Strong Buy” from the 23 analysts covering it, and the mean price target of $410.33 is a premium of 32.8% to current levels.
