Italy lost over two legs to Sweden in the play-offs before the 2018 World Cup before they were stunned by North Macedonia in the semi-finals of the play-offs four years ago.
Gennaro Gattuso’s side defeated Northern Ireland 2-0 in Bergamo on Thursday, and now face a Bosnia and Herzegovina side who ended Wales’s World Cup dream on penalties in Cardiff.
The play-off draw means Italy must go away from home for the final, with the hosts looking to reach just their first World Cup finals and first also since qualifying for the 2014 tournament in Brazil.
