Is Antonio Brown the greatest receiver in Steelers history?

It seems like every time former Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Antonio Brown shows up in the media, the conversation about where he stands in Steelers history comes up.

A lot of where you stand on the debate comparing Brown to his Steelers’ peers has to do with age. Many old-school fans point to what Lynn Swann and John Stallworth did when the Steelers were the most dominant franchise in the NFL and give one of them the nod. Honestly, the fact they played together probably hurts them in this argument for me. Both players are known for some of the most memorable catches of all time but from a pure numbers standpoint, they were fitting of the era.

Then there is Hines Ward. Statistically, no Steelers receiver did what he did for a career. He is one of only 14 receivers in NFL history with at least 1,000 career receptions and he holds every Steelers career receiver mark. Plus, for many, Ward absolutely epitomizes what it means to be a Steeler.

But Brown, before he went off the deep end was supremely talented. We will forever wonder what could have been if he hadn’t decided to blow up his career at only 30 years old. However, one thing Brown does have in his favor is his numbers from 2013-2018. No receiver in league history had as many receptions or receiving yards during a six-year stretch. Brown’s totals of 686 receptions and 9,145 receiving yards. For his career, he had 928 receptions and would have easily surpassed 1,000 had he stayed in Pittsburgh.
