Irvine Welsh gives away ticket to Rangers fan ahead of Europa League final

Trainspotting author Irvine Welsh has made one Rangers fan's dream come true on Twitter this morning.

The 63 year-old Edinburgh native gave away his ticket to next week's Europa League final against Eintracht Frankfurt in Seville for free.

Welsh, who is a die-hard West Ham fan, took to Twitter to reveal that he had a spare ticket for the showpiece final and "rather than waste it" he wanted to donate it to a Gers supporter.

He tweeted: "As West Ham unfortunately didn’t make the Europa final, I now have a spare ticket. Rather than waste it I would like to donate it to a Rangers fan.

"This is not a hoax, please get in touch if interested. Will need details to transfer it to your phone as guest for UEFA security."

The tweet sparked a flurry of shares and responses from folk keen on securing a gold-dust entry to the game, which is being held at Sevilla's Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán stadium next Wednesday night.

Among them was commentator Clive Tyldesley, who responded: "[Ally] McCoist is after one for his son."

Having posted the tweet at around 8:30am this morning, Welsh followed up 30 minutes later with a tweet confirming he had given the ticket away.

He did so while encouraging any other West Ham fans who may be holding onto a ticket to pass them on to Rangers fans.

He tweeted: "Hi everyone just to say that the ticket has gone to a guy on here - he’s been in touch with his details and we’re just waiting on UEFA completing the transfer. Sorry I couldn’t have helped out more people who wanted to see the game.

"If any West Ham mates are holding, check my TL."

A class act from Welsh, we must say.
