Irvine Meadow 2 Craigmark 3 as player-boss nets late winner in major cup upset

Ryan Caddis reckons people might finally sit up and take notice of Craigmark after they came from behind twice to dump Irvine Meadow out of the Kilmarnock Pie West of Scotland League Cup.

Player-boss Caddis won his side a second half penalty to get them back to 2-2 then bagged a late winner as the Conference A underdogs stunned their Premier Division opponents at Meadow Park.

But the rookie gaffer, 36, insisted all the credit belonged to his players after they booked a third round spot with a display that had guts and composure in equal measure.

He told Ayrshire Football News: "We know coming here you're going to be up against it but we just needed to stand tall and we did that.

"From back to front, we were tremendous.

"Without trying to sound arrogant, we try and dominate the ball. That's the way we want to play and I thought for spells today we did that.

"Our retention of the ball was very good and when we did give it away we recovered very well.

"The Medda are a very, very good side. Hopefully now people will start to take notice of us.

"We've been flying under the radar a wee bit - which I've been quite happy about - but we might earn a wee bit of respect after that."

The home side opened the scoring in the 15th minute when Connor Boyd tapped home Del McNab's wicked cross from the left.

The striker should have double his and Meadow's tally 10 minutes later when McNab played him through on goal only to scuff a weak shot straight at goalkeeper Lee Binnie.

Craigmark were patient in their approach, attempting to build from the back, and the quality of their possession play was enough to keep the Meadow defence on their toes without really carving out any clear-cut opportunities.

They had a lucky escape in 34 minutes when McNab found the net with a lovely dinked finish only for a tight offside call to deny him.

Six minutes later Craigmark were back on level terms, Steven Tan leaping like a salmon to power a header past Meadow number one Marc Waters.

However, the celebrations had barely died down and Meadow were back in front - Michael Wardrope finding the top corner with a free-kick from 25 yards out.

The second half was a scrappy affair with few chances at either end until substitute Caddis earned Craigmark a penalty just after the hour mark.

The experienced frontman showed strength and skill to shield the ball in the Medda box before a clumsy challenge by the back-tracking Boyd sent him sprawling to the turf right in front of referee Calum Haswell.

The whistler immediately pointed to the spot and Tan stepped up to fire a cool-as-you-like finish into the roof of the net.

Meadow tried to go back on the front foot but Craigmark dug in admirably to restrict them to shots from distance.

And when their chance came, the vistors took it, Caddis slipping a shot past Waters from six yards to put Craigmark 3-2 in front with just four minutes left on the clock.

Neil Slooves headed a good opportunity over the bar as Meadow desperately tried to save the tie but Craigmark held on for a famous victory.
