'Irresponsible' drivers near Glasgow primary school causing safety concerns

Calls are being made for action to stop “irresponsible” drivers from causing safety concerns near a Glasgow primary school.

People have been parking on a turning circle close to North Kelvinside Primary, creating “an obstruction” — and one councillor has asked for ‘keep clear’ markings or yellow lines in the area.

Cllr Martha Wardrop, Greens, said the issue was a “major community concern” and she doesn’t “want anyone getting injured”.

At a Hillhead area partnership meeting, Cllr Wardrop said she was “concerned about Maryhill fire station and the access and egress because of traffic issues at North Kelvinside Primary”.

David Murdoch, from the fire service, said while they haven’t faced “significant” obstruction, he would encourage the public to “keep access routes clear”.

Cllr Wardrop said the police have asked for bollards to be installed.

Describing the parking as “irresponsible”, she added: “We need to get bollards, yellow lines and clear markings installed as a matter of urgency for the safety of everyone.”

A council official said he had met with a community police officer who was working to address the issue.

At the Hillhead meeting, Graeme Morrow, also from the fire service, confirmed the problem had been reported to him and said he was planning to engage with the council over double yellow lines.

“So when the fire engines are coming in and out they’ve got a clear turning circle,” he added. “But also to make that safer for the kids that are attending school.”

After the meeting, Cllr Wardrop said she had visited the school in December and found nine cars parked in the turning circle.

“This turning area has been used as a car park since the introduction of parking controls within other parts of the North Kelvin area,” Cllr Wardrop said.

“As a result of this, parents dropping off or collecting children are unable to use the turning area. The parked cars are causing an obstruction and ongoing road safety concerns for teachers and parents.

“I have requested the council provide ‘keep clear’ or yellow line markings on the turning area roadway to prevent cars using it as a car park.”

Mr Murdoch, local senior officer for City of Glasgow, said: “Whilst we have not been affected by significant obstruction in this area, we would always encourage members of the public to be considerate of emergency services when parking their vehicles and keep access routes clear.

“Our emergency response drivers are highly skilled and are experienced in navigating many road and traffic challenges.”
